WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY'RE DOING?
They’re both doing very well as star talkers and entertainers. One is
arguably the most popular male OAP in Lagos, the other, a mid-class
stand-up comedian who stages some of the bestselling variety concerts
around the country.
But, just like oliver twist, they both want more. And they’re putting
their money where their mouth is – investing in TV productions as they
prepare to own their own separate TV shows.
AY has just finished recording the first season of his own sitcom to be
called ‘AY’s Crib’. The comedian shot for weeks, inside a Magado studio,
in Lagos. The show, according to NET findings, will feature five
characters: AY (as himself), Alexx Ekubor (as JJC), Buchi Franklyn (as
KC), Ush bebe (as Ush) and the sexy Venita Akpofure (as Mimi). There
will also be episodes featuring celeb appearances, including one by
actress Mercy Johnson.
According to AY, ‘the sitcom came as a response to the yearnings of
countless fans of popular AY skits such as The Kumute, Room 509
and Petrol.
‘It tells the story of a younger version of Ay who lives in a house with
2 of his university friends and a distant cousin from Warri who serves
as his gateman while dating mimi, his rich, spoilt girlfriend…’
AY’s Crib will air in the last quarter.
Yaw’s own show titled ‘YAW’s n MYN’, rounded up shooting in Omole,
Lagos, over the weekend. Although mostly known with his work at Wazobia
FM, Yaw was already a thriving radio, TV and stage actor, before landing
on the opportunity to present on radio.
Now, the wildly-loved OAP is eager to debut his own TV show, hoping to replicate the radio success with TV fans.
Just like AY’s show, YAW’s n MYN features different characters, as well as celeb cameos, with Yaw acting as himself.
It’s not unusual for stand-up comedians to take their game to TV.
Grandgodfather of stand-up comedy in Nigeria has had nearly a
dozen (including the hit ‘Tom, Dick and ALi), as have Patrick Doyle,
Mohammed Danjuma (late), Tee A and more recently Teju Babyface. Julius
Agwu has also announced he’s starting his own TV show.
