IKOYI ESTATE CRISIS: DPO ACCUSED OF FUELLING TENSION OVER ALLEGED ILLEGAL MOSQUE CONSTRUCTION
Residents Warn Lagos Government: “A Major Crisis Could Erupt If Nothing Is Done”
LAGOS — Tension is reportedly mounting in Abdullahi Adamu Estate, Obalende, Ikoyi, Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, as residents accuse the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Dolphin Estate Police Station, Olutekunbi Ekundayo, of allegedly shielding and supporting the controversial construction of a two-storey mosque on land designated as a car park and recreational area.
The residents, through the Estate Executive Council, have petitioned the Lagos State Government and other relevant authorities, demanding immediate intervention before the dispute escalates into a serious confrontation.
The petitioners alleged that construction commenced on the disputed property in January 2023 despite the land being designated for parking and recreational purposes under the estate’s master plan.
They further alleged that following complaints to the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), the agency issued a contravention notice and construction was temporarily halted.
According to the residents, construction has allegedly resumed, raising fresh concerns over compliance with planning regulations and the authority of relevant government agencies.
The Estate Executive Council has also made serious allegations against the Dolphin Estate DPO, claiming that Olutekunbi Ekundayo is using his position to protect those behind the disputed construction and frustrate efforts to stop the development.
The residents described the alleged conduct as deeply troubling, insisting that the DPO’s alleged involvement is further inflaming an already volatile situation.
They warned that if nothing is done immediately, a major crisis could erupt within the estate, with potentially serious consequences for residents and the wider community.
The residents are therefore demanding an urgent investigation by the Lagos State Government, police authorities and relevant planning agencies into both the disputed construction and the allegations against the DPO.
The allegations against Olutekunbi Ekundayo remain claims made by the petitioners and have not been independently established. The DPO, developers and other parties involved should be given an opportunity to respond.
The residents called for decisive government action, warning that continued inaction could allow the situation to spiral beyond the control of the authorities.
